Cochineal, Cinnabar relates a fragmentary history of cosmetic blushes, flushes and our perception of blushing as a physiological response to shame, guilt and desire. A female inmate receives a makeover in preparation for her trial; inmates communicate with rats through the sewer system to conspire against the guards; three generations of 17th century apothecaries cater to wives seeking widowhood and an imaginary cellmate travels through time taking the blame for mysterious occurrences.
